We’ve come up on the one month mark of Frank Ocean’s highly anticipated album, “Blonde“, and I’m here to help you to figure out what the fuck that “Nikes” video is all about. The only Single to come with the album, “Nikes”, was given to us via Apple Music by music video and it was jam packed with pop culture references left and right. Nothing you would pick up right off the bat, but that’s why I’m here, to show you Frank’s true artistic ability at it’s full.
Let’s start off with the who “I got two versions…” line. Was this showing that the video album “Endless” that Frank released to fulfill his Def Jam contract one version, and “Blonde” was another version? Or was “Blonde” a two version album itself? If you go to the 9th track “Nights” you will notice a switch of pace at exactly the 3:30 mark. This happens to be the exact middle of the 60 minute album. Take what you want from this theory but to me it seems like “Blonde” itself was to EPs put together.
Back to this “Nikes” video itself…
At the 00:36 mark of the video you will see a woman laying down in a sea of dollar bills looking remarkably similar to the Oscar winning movie “American Beauty.”
Fast forward to the 1:40 mark of the video, we get the low voice telling us some rules. Remind you of anything? If you say it out loud, you already broke rule number one my G! Don’t sweat it though we won’t tell anyone. The voice tells us “Don’t take no photos in the party. That’s rule number one!” Sounds quite similar to the cult classic “Fight Club” film where the number one rule is to not talk about “Fight Club.”
Shortly after the Fight Club reference, we get a reference to a 90’s Suicide Cult called “Heaven’s Gate” at the 2:13 mark. The “Heaven’s Gate” cult was a San Diego based cult that believed alien life form was traveling behind the Hale-Bopp comet would pick them up if they committed suicide.
Frank Ocean has proved to us that he is a brilliant mastermind. With every listen to this album, I continue to find new things and that’s the beauty of it all. It’s a true masterpiece. With this Nike’s video just being a small part of something bigger. Let us know other things you’ve found about in the comments or on twitter @thedailygems!
